Birkigt had seen the performance of his engines in races and seeking to improve it further, he designed a new engine that aimed to provide a car an easiness to drive.

The designer enhanced the chassis and suspension, moved the engine to the core and lowered its center of gravity, making the T15/45 to be the first commercialized racing car in history.

The very first T15/45 was delivered, with all its novelties incorporated, to King Alfonso XIII at the end of 1909. He was so delighted with the model that he agreed for it to use his name.

The car immediately began to win races, which quickly boosted sales.

BEYOND

1909

It was 1909 when Hispano-Suiza won the first place in Mont Ventoux with two cars, with Paolo Zuccarelli and Derny as drivers. After this event, Hispano-Suiza participated in the Coupe de Voiturettes de Boulogne-Sur-Mer, where they achieved good results. This was the beginning of a prolific racing career for Hispano-Suiza.

Alfonso XIII participated in the Concurso Automovilista del Guadarrama in 1912, with his HS 45 HP model Alfonso XIII, being accompanied by his cousin Don Alfonso de Orleans. In 1921, Alfonso XIII won the “Cuesta de las Perdices” race driving his H6 with chassis number 10.0003, reaching an average speed of over 102 kilometres per hour on this climb.

1913

CONQUERING THE SKY

What began as a series of improvements in HS engines, ended up being a lineage that helped to lift the flight of the pioneer pilots of the early twentieth century.

The Barcelona factory of Hispano Suiza began to assemble airplane engines, beginning with the “Flecha”, designed by Eduardo Barrón, one of the first airplanes to take skies thanks to this new steel heart.

With the Great War, the Bois-Colombes factory was required by the French army to manufacture airplanes to fight against the German threat.

Once the Great War was over, Hispano aircraft engines continued to be used in both civil and military aviation for much of the century, achieving numerous distance and reliability records, such as Costes and Rignot’s non-stop flight of over 5000km in 1926.

In the book Vivre avec Picasso, writer Françoise Gillot, mother of Claude and Paloma Picasso, the author mentiones this car, which Picasso considered “his treasure”.

Led by his inseparable driver, Marcel Boudin, Picasso made numerous trips with his famliy, transported canvases and sculptures, and in the 1950s it was used almost exclusively to attend bullfights.

Parked in the garage of Nôtre-Deme-de Vie, his home in Cannes, Picasso went to sit inside to be inspired, think, remember or rest. The car is currently kept in the Picasso familiy.

Birkgit state-of-the-art engineering in the H6 was maintained for the next ten years, and manufacturers such as Rolls-Royce, Renault and General Motors acquired the servo-brake patent to use in their luxury models.
